I’ve experienced both the abrupt “why” and the softer “I’m curious….” The latter also requires that you have a relationship with the person otherwise it’s a “why” poorly disguised and more insulting.
Tone (and body language, if in person or visible on screen) definitely matters.
For me, it's easier to remember the goal of reminding / assuring the other person that I'm supporting rather than attacking them if I have a filter in my mind on the lookout for when I'm about to use the word "why".
