What you’re going through is so hard.
But we’re here with you, and we’ve got this.
You’ve been doing better than you realize.
And you have more support than you know.
~~~~
What if your inner voices sounded more like that?
I just listened to a meditation that mentioned how we can’t control our circumstances and what happens in the external world…
And we can’t even control every thought that pops into our head...
But we can control some of our internal experience…
And we certainly don’t want to contribute to harsh inner conditions.
I love that phrase:
“harsh inner conditions”.
Reminds me of my post where I mentioned Dr. Peter Attia who said that he grew up full of rage and a mean, critical inner voice like Bobby Knight’s yelling at him all the time.
None of my inner voices are as bad as Bobby Knight, but they’re not all saints or Zen masters either.
There is room for improvement.
I want my mind to be pristine.
Imagine a white carpet.
What’s the best way to keep it clean?
Only invite people in who won’t trample mud in or otherwise make a mess.
Better yet, even more appealing than a white carpet…
Envision a relaxing scene in nature:
Fresh air, gentle breeze, beautiful landscape, the calming sounds of a waterfall.
Don’t let anyone (including voices in your head) bring unwanted noises, smells, or visual distractions.
You want a tidy, sharp, healthy mind.
In other words:
No emergencies, complaints, worries, catastrophizing.
Easier said than done, of course.
But Step 1 is to consider this question every day:
What should I be saying when I talk to myself?
It’s a powerful question.
Questions direct your focus.
If you can get good at being a bouncer at the door of your mind, inviting in only voices that are loving and empowering (and letting all others wander on by), your entire life will improve quickly.
👀 Caught my eye this week:
I love channels like this where someone plays all the parts of a song. So impressive!
Creative rendition of the great Cranberries song.
“As I allow my mood to improve, and as I choose to be generally cheerful and optimistic, I become more perceptive, and I attract better and better opportunities.”
